About Virtual Lab Nodal Center of KSOU
Virtual Labs (VLabs) is an initiative funded by the Ministry of Education (formerly
MHRD), Government of India, under NMEICT, envisaged as an e-learning platform for
practice oriented subject areas in the same lines of NPTEL for classroom courses, aimed at
facilitating learning of engineering and sciences through experimentation in a virtual
environment at the preferred pace, place and period (time) of the learner. Under the VLabs
project, over 160 practical lab courses consisting of approximately 1200+ web-enabled
experiments from engineering and basic science streams have been designed and deployed on
www.vlab.co.in for the use of students of undergraduate, post graduate, doctoral levels and
faculty members; who can make use of these resources for virtual-remote experimentation
and learning.
National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal is proudly associated
with the mission of ICT aided experiential learning as the one among the eleven Participating
Institutes (PI) across the country, engaged in the development, maintenance and outreach of
the online resources under the VLabs Project on behalf of MoE. We formally extend our
support to over 360+ institutions which are serving as the Nodal Centres of Virtual Labs
NITK Surathkal to facilitate and support the use of the Virtual Labs platform and even to
contribute content to the VLabs Development Community by developing newer labs in
existing and in new subject areas in various disciplines.
Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) being one of the Nodal Center of Virtual
Labs under NITK Surathkal can now train more faculty members and students on the
initiative and also specific to experiments/subjects in the university curriculum post the
introductory workshop on Virtual Labs completed by the Virtual Labs team of NITK
Surathkal. University can further organize workshops and outreach events at a local level for
the other associated or neighboring engineering and science colleges and train more students
and teachers to utilize the resources and we shall extend our support in the process as
required. At a later stage, KSOU may propose the development of new labs in the gap areas
identified in the Virtual Labs catalogue by engaging faculty/student teams competent to
undertake the same. This is however an advanced process involving evaluations at NITK
Surathkal and at the national level.
